The CODE Button (Antitheft Feature)
The BMW On-Board Computer IIThe CODE Button
This is an anti-theft device. After entering a four-digit series of numbers, the car cannot be started until the correct "code" has been re-entered. If three incorrect codes are entered, or if three successive attempts are made to start the car, a loud horn will sound for thirty seconds.
To enter a code, the ignition switch must be in the first accessory position.
Press the C0DE button, and four flashing dashes will appear on the display. Now enter any four-digit number from 0000 to 9999 with the numbered buttons.
If an error is made, or a change in the code number is desired, either turn the ignition switch to the second accessory position, or press the SET-RES button. This will cancel the code, and four flashing dashes will re-appear.
When the desired code has been entered, turn the ignition switch to the off position. The code is now stored in the computer's memory.
To start the car, turn the ignition switch to either accessory position. The display will again show four flashing dashes. Enter the pre-determined code.
If the code numbers are correct, the car can be started. If they are not, the car cannot be started. The starter motor will turn but the engine will not start.
After the code has been correctly entered, either starting the car or pressing the SET-RES button cancels the code. If neither of these functions are performed, the code number will be retained by the memory and the entire procedure must be repeated.
