Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove exhaust assembly and exhaust heat shield.
3. Drain transmission fluid, then remove crossmember support bracket.
4. Disconnect propeller shaft from transmission.
5. Disconnect propeller shaft from center support bearing, then remove the center support bearing.
6. Disconnect gear selector cable, bayonet plug and speed sender connector from transmission.
7. Remove protective cover from bellhousing, concealing torque converter bolts.
8. Remove three converter to driveplate bolts, rotating flywheel as necessary, using socket tool No. 24 1 110 or equivalent.
9. Install a transmission jack to the transmission.
10. On 318 Models, remove air collection box.
11. On all models, disconnect all electrical wiring and ducts from rear of engine.
12. Support engine from below, then remove rear crossmember.
13. Install engine support tool No. 00 0 200 or equivalent, to engine compartment.
14. Connect engine support tool to crankcase and tighten spindle to support engine.
15. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector, then loosen transmission mount bolts.
16. Carefully lower transmission, then disconnect oil cooler lines on crankcase and oil pan.
17. Disconnect front and rear oil cooler pipes, then remove transmission to engine bolts.
18. Prevent torque converter from sliding out of transmission by attaching securing tool No. 24 4 080 or equivalent, to transmission case with the flat side of retainer facing the converter.
19. Carefully disconnect transmission from engine.
20. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.
b. Use new transmission to engine mounting bolts.
c. Secure flywheel in position using retaining tool No. 11 2 170 or equivalent.
d. Replace O-rings as necessary.
e. Center transmission on crossmember.
f. Check and adjust fluid level before operating vehicle.
