SUBJECT: Adapter Harness for Air Flow Meter

MODELS: E30/M42


Situation: Due to an occasional impairment of the signal between the air flow meter potentiometer and the DME control unit, the engine idle may dip below specification at times causing a possible rough idle condition.

Vehicles
Affected: The vehicles affected are M42 equipped E30 models, produced from 2/90 - 12/90.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle in this range is affected by the Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to item # 6 "Vehicle History Inquiry" and enter the chassis number (last seven) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges, but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision factor is the DCS inquiry.

Correction: Adapter Harness (P/N 13 62 1 734 516) must be installed on all affected vehicles between the engine wiring harness and the air flow meter. The adapter harness, which incorporates an impedance converter, filters and amplifies the signal from the air flow meter to the DME control unft.





Procedure: - With the ignition key in the off position, disconnect the harness and the air flow meter.

- Install the adapter harness between the engine wiring harness and the air flow meter.

- Using a wire tie (P/N 61 13 1 382 243) secure the wiring harness to the intake bellows boot as shown in the illustration.


After completing the installation of the adapter harness, read out the fault memory of the DME control unit and cancel faults if necessary.

Note: Do not replace the air flow meter if an air flow meter fault is stored in the DME control unit prior to the installation of the adapter harness.

Label
Instructions: This service action has been assigned code number 58. After the prescribed work has been performed obtain a label (SD 89-006) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label.





b) punch out code number 58 printed on the label.

c) bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix it to the driver's door as shown.


If the car already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix this label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched out hole of the new label.

Status: Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Limited Warranty.
