Removal/Installation
Fig. 1 Center Shaft:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then disable airbag as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL in the electrical section.
3. Remove lower instrument panel trim.
4. Remove column universal joint bolt, then press down on steering spindle to separate steering column sections.
5. Remove upper column retaining collar, Fig. 1.
6. Unlock bayonet connector from bottom of column by turning counterclockwise.
7. Disconnect all electrical connectors from column.
8. Remove safety shear screws with a chisel or grind off, then remove column.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure bayonet connector is locked into correct position.
b. Check position of collar and snap ring. Ensure snap ring locks into recess in collar.
c. Steering column universal joint bolt must engage in locking groove of steering spindle.
