REMOVING AND INSTALLING ENGINE

CAUTION
: Disconnecting the battery will cancel (clear) the memory of control units which have diagnostic trouble code capabilities. Be sure to interrogate all control units for possible diagnostic trouble codes prior to disconnecting the battery.
BMW anti-theft radios can be rendered useless by disconnecting the battery. Make sure you know the correct code before disconnecting the battery. See your owner's manual for more information.

- Disconnect battery negative pole.
- Lift engine hood into assembly position.
- Unscrew and remove splash guard.
- Remove transmission.

- Drain coolant from engine block.

Installation Note: Replace seal, torque drain plug to 50 + 6 Nm (37 + 4.5 ft lbs)

- Remove fan cowl and radiator.
- Remove intake filter housing.

- Remove Fan.

CAUTION: Left-hand threads. Using special tool 11 5 030, brace against pulley and unfasten cap nut from water pump using special tool 11 5 040.

Installation Note: Tighten fan with special tool 11 5 040. Tightening torque = 40 - 50 Nm (30 - 37 ft lbs).

NOTE: When using special tool 11 5 040, 30 Nm (22 ft lbs) on the torque wrench scale are equivalent to a tightening torque of 40 Nm (30 ft lbs).

- Disconnect coolant hoses on engine.

- Disconnect heater hoses at heater and heating valve.

Installation Note: Fill and bleed cooling system,

- Pull adapter out of brake booster.
- Disconnect Bowden cable for throttle valve actuation.
- Remove alternator drive belt.

- Disconnect plug.
- Loosen hose clamp and unscrew mounting screws.
- Lift off air cleaner with air flow sensor.

- Unscrew power steering oil supply tank from left-hand engine carrier and tie back to one side.

- Unscrew power steering pump from engine and tie back to one side.

Note: Lines remain connected.

WARNING: Catch and dispose of fuel as it escapes.

- Unfasten fuel delivery and fuel return lines.

Installation Note:
Top(1) = return
Bottom(2) = feed from filter

Arrangement of Tank Pipes on Engine Carrier:
(1) = return
(2) = feed (to filter)
(3) = tank vent

- Remove plug connection on idle speed actuator.

- Pull off hose to filter for tank ventilation.

Disconnecting Engine Wiring Harness on Engine
- Pull off ignition leads on ignition coil.

Installation Note: Numbers for the firing order are located on the leads and cap.

- Unscrew connections on the alternator.

- Unscrew connections on the starter.

- Disconnect both plugs on electric lead duct.
(1) = cylinder identifying sender (constant ignition distributor)
(2) = pulse sender for Digital Motor Electronics (DME)

- Pull off throttle valve potentiometer plug.
Location: On throttle valve neck.

- Pull off plug for fuel injectors.
Location: On the end of electric lead duct, close to the fuel pipes.

- Pull off plug on oil pressure switch.
Location: On oil filter

- Unscrew supports for intake manifolds, front and rear.

- Take electric lead duct off of the engine.

CAUTION: Make sure that rubber grommets of electric lead openings are clipped in the electric lead duct correctly when mounting the electric lead duct.

- Pull off plugs (1 and 2).

CAUTION: Don't mix up plugs.
(1) = Coolant temperature gauge sender
(2) = Coolant temperature sensor (DME)
(3) = Oil pressure switch

- Disconnect electric lead duct and wire harness on engine and lay aside.

- Attach engine to special tool 11 0 000 (engine hoist).

Front and rear suspension arrangement

- Unfasten right ground wire.
- Unfasten left and right engine mounts.
- Lift out engine.

CAUTION: A removed engine with installed HVA (hydraulic valve compensation) elements must not be left upside down for longer than 10 minutes, as otherwise HVA elements will lose hydraulic fluid and no longer function correctly.

- Install in reverse order of removal, paying close attention to installation notes and proper electrical and fuel connections.
