Shared Characteristics of E34/E36 Systems

Some of the characteristics common to all IHKR climate control Systems (E34 & E36) are:

- Control panel which has:
- slide levers or knobs to control air discharge location
- on/off push buttons for A/C compressor, rear window defroster, and recirculating air
- left and right side desired-temperature knobs
- blower speed knob.

- Heater core divided into two sections (left and right sides).
- Two solenoid-actuated heater core inlet valves.
- Five temperature sensors.
- Motor-driven fan mounted on back of control panel to pull air over the interior temperature sensor.
- Blower assembly having a single motor with twin squirrel-cage impellers.
- Combination of stepper motors and bowden cables to actuate air intake and discharge flaps.
- Control module with integrated fault memory.
- Control wheel at the center face-vent outlet to provide stratified air.

NOTE: It's important to remember that, despite the above-mentioned shared characteristics, all IHKR systems do not function exactly the same. The specific functions and features of each IHKR system will be covered in detail in this course.
