Preparation

Raise engine hood into assembly position
Coupe: Slightly raise interlock on damper and unclip damper.




- Unfasten ground strap.
- Unfasten screw connection from lever. Pull engine hood and lever forwards.




- Clip special tool 51 2 140 in place of damper.




- Sedan: Unfasten interlock and raise the engine hood.




CAUTION: Press hinges over dead center point.




- Disconnect negative terminal of battery.

NOTE: Battery is in the trunk.




- Disconnect the plug in connections at the air mass sensor.




- Loosen hose clamps and securing screws. Lift out air cleaner with air mass sensor.

NOTE: When installing, connect front intake fitting.




- Pull off hoses for idle-speed control valve and crankcase ventilation.




- Unscrew screws and loosen hose clamp and remove air duct for alternator.
- Lift off tray.







Remove Fan Cowl
- Lift out expansion rivets on left and right sides.
- Pull out fan cowl in an upward direction.




NOTE: When installing, engage tabs in holders on left and right sides when inserting fan cowl.




Remove fan
- Hold pulley with special tool 11 5 030 and unscrew coupling nut.




NOTE: Upon installation, tighten fan with special tool 11 5 040. Torque bolt to 40 Nm using special tool.




Remove Fresh Air Duct
- Lift out grill.




- Unscrew screws for cable duct.




- Unscrew right hand retaining plate.




- Unscrew left hand screw.




- Pull out fresh-air duct in upward direction.




Remove accelerator cable
- Unclip cable.
- Pull out cable and rubber retainer.





Remove Intake Manifold And Throttle Valve From Engine
- Pull adapter out of brake booster.

CAUTION: Plug connection bore




- Take off covers.




NOTE: Lift off cover horizontally. Pull it forward and then swing it out over oil filler neck.




- Unscrew ground strap at timing-case cover.




- Remove screws, Pull off connecting strip.




CAUTION: Watch out for rubber seals.




- Pull off connectors at Ignition coils.
- Take off connecting strip complete with wires.




- Unclip connection for cylinder-head ventilation.




- Pull off connector for air temperature sensor.




- Pull off hose for tank ventilation.




- Disconnect hoses for throttle-valve pre-heating.




- Pull off connector for throttle-valve switch.




- Unclip hose for idle-speed control valve at manifold.

CAUTION: Retainer breaks off easily

NOTE: Figure shows bottom view of connection (Not visible in vehicle) In some cars the retainer could be additionally secured by a catch strap.




- Disconnect fuel hoses.

Installation Note:
(1) Front = Intake from filter (blank pipe)
(2) Back = Return (black pipe)

NOTE: Replace fuel hoses




- Disconnect fuel hose from feed line (to filter) at engine carrier.




- Unscrew support for manifold.




- Unscrew intake manifold from cylinder head.

CAUTION: Make sure no parts fall into ports




Installation Note: Replace seals when reinstalling manifold.





- Disconnect plug in connections:
1 Temperature sender
2 Remote thermometer
3 Oil-Pressure switch
4 Idle speed control valve




- Disconnect plug in connections:
Sensor for cylinder recognition (black)
Impulse sensor for DME (grey)
Disconnect plug-in connection for VANOS unit if connected.


Remove Exhaust Manifold
- Unscrew nuts.
- Lift exhaust manifold off.
