SUBJECT:
EPROM Update for M50 Engines

MODELS:
E34, E36 with M50 produced 1/90 - 8/92 (non-VANOS)

Situation:
Vehicles within the production range listed may be affected by one or more of the following conditions:

^ Engine will not start primarily during cold weather (32°F or lower) or at high altitudes, in conjunction with the following symptoms:

- Long cranking time, engine will not start.
- Engine starts but runs rough, black smoke coming from exhaust.
- Spark plugs are "wet."

^ Check Engine light is illuminated in conjunction with:

- Fault code 37- Oxygen Sensor Heating Relay
- Fault code 70 or 201 - Oxygen sensor failure

Vehicles Affected:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Correction:
When an affected vehicle is next in the workshop, install a new DME EPROM and program it using the latest MoDiC programming software (A & B) version 5.1 or higher.

1. Prior to starting the EPROM replacement and programming update, check for and correct existing DME faults. Once all faults have been corrected and cleared, the update can be performed.

^ Erroneous setting of fault code 37 will be prevented only by completion of the programming update.

^ If fault code 70 or 201 are present, replace the oxygen sensor and claim using regular warranty procedures. A diagnostic printout must accompany all parts sent to the WPRC.

2. Follow the attached programming procedure if the information displayed on the DME identification screen of the DIS or MoDiC matches the following:

Bosch Hardware Number 0 261 200 402
Bosch Hardware Number 0 261 200 403
Bosch Hardware Number 0 261 200 405

3. For reliable cold start performance it is also essential that the correct spark plugs are installed.

Refer to S.I. 12 03 85 (1085) for spark plug application.

4. Always ensure that an approved engine oil with a viscosity matching the ambient temperature range of the vehicle is used.

Refer to S.I. 11 08 94 (4139) for recommended oil viscosities and the operating fluids manual for approved engine oils.

*** Procedure:

Replace the EPROM as indicated in the attachment. Reprogram the EPROM using the latest MoDiC programming software disks (A & B) version 5.1 or higher.

^ Prior to starting the programming update, check and correct DME faults if any are found. Once all faults have been corrected and cleared the update can be performed.

NOTE:
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU START THE ENGINE AND LET IT IDLE FOR AT LEAST 1 MINUTE IMMEDIATELY AFTER COMPLETING THE EPROM REPLACEMENT AND REPROGRAMMING. BY ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO SIT WITH ONLY THE IGNITION SWITCHED ON, DAMAGE TO THE DME FINAL STAGE MAY RESULT.

^ At no time during the update procedure should you turn the ignition off, disconnect the control module or remove the MoDiC.

Aftermarket EPROMs:

If during the course of replacing the EPROM you find an aftermarket EPROM in the original DME:

1. Contact the customer and advise them that BMW recommends that such an EPROM be removed and replaced by a BMW-approved EPROM and software.

2. If the customer insists on keeping the non-approved EPROM installed, advise them that this may cause nonconformance with environmental emission laws and regulations, plus it may affect the warranty coverage on their vehicle.

After you advise the customer of these considerations and they insist on keeping the aftermarket EPROM installed:

1. Abort the Service Action.

2. On the repair order note that the customer insisted on keeping the aftermarket EPROM installed and does not wish to have the Service Action performed.

3. Upon pickup of the car, ask the customer to sign a statement indicating that he or she refused to have the Service Action performed.

4. Keep a copy of the repair order in the service file for that vehicle,

5. Reimbursement for time spent on the vehicle can be obtained if you:

^ Utilize the DCS claim appeal.

^ Submit a legible copy of the repair order indicating that the customer refused to have the BMW EPROM installed.

BMW NA will issue a claim credit in the amount of 4 flat rate units, referencing the repair order submitted.

If the customer agrees to have the Service Action performed and the DME EPROM replaced with a BMW-approved EPROM and software, you should:

1. Make a notation on the repair order that the aftermarket EPROM was returned to the customer.

2. Upon pickup of the car, ask the customer to sign a statement indicating that the aftermarket EPROM was returned.

3. Return the aftermarket EPROM to the customer in a suitable container.

With the following statement present on the MoDiC display or printout:

"Scope of EPROM del.:" Old Part Number New Part Number

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action is assigned code number 127. After the vehicle is checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:

a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1).

b) Punch out code number 127 printed on the label (2).

c) Bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:

Parts and label are reimbursable without regard for vehicle age or mileage on affected vehicles until repair date of October 30, 1995. After October 30, 1995, parts and labor will be reimbursable under the terms of the applicable BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.

The notification letter will be sent to all customers with affected vehicles.
