SUBJECT:
Cellular Telephone Inoperative When Vehicle Is in Motion; Radio Reception Poor on AM Band When Vehicle Is in Motion

MODELS:
8 Series (E31), 7 Series (E32) - Vehicles Equipped with Electronic Shock Absorber Control (EDC III)

Situation:
Either or both of the above-mentioned complaints may be encountered on vehicles equipped with EDC III. If either or both of these complaints only occur when road speed is present, and do not occur when the vehicle is stationary, a defective EDC III Control Module may be installed in the vehicle.

Cause:
Failed internal components of the EDC III Control Modules allow A.C. voltage to appear on the power supply for the control module. This A.C. voltage then migrates to the power supplies for several other circuits, including the cellular telephone and radio circuits. This A.C. voltage appears only when the EDC III Control Module receives a road speed input from the Instrument Cluster.

Correction:
If a failed EDC III Control Module is suspected of causing this complaint, verify by the following:

1) Using the BMW Service Tester, call up the Instrument Cluster and simulate a road speed signal of 20 MPH.

NOTE:
(E32 vehicles only) If displayed road speed is 50% less than the input value, this does not represent a fault, but only an incompatibility between E32 Instrument Cluster software and current, BMW Service Test/MoDiC software. This will be corrected in the next software version. If this is encountered, perform a "System Test" (found under "Special Functions") immediately before performing the speed signal simulation.

2) If the symptoms appear only with road speed (actual or simulated) and are not present with no road speed, turn off ignition and disconnect the EDC III Control Module.

3) Simulate a road speed signal again, and verify that the symptoms are not present.

4) Turn off ignition, install a new EDC III module, and repeat step 1 to vefify that the complaint(s) have been corrected.

5) After installation of the EDC III Control Module, clear any faults in the fault memory and set the steering angle offset using the BMW Service Test or MoDiC. Select Item 4, "Run Off Test" in the EDC selection, then select Item 1, "Steering Angle Offset" and follow the instructions.

6) Clear any erroneous faults set in other control modules as a result of road speed simulation. Refer to page 6200.2A-11 of the Diagnostic Procedures Manual (E32/E34), or to the information on the Service Tester screen during the road speed signal simulation (E31).

Important Note:
A Quality Control Information ("pink sheet") must be completed for any occurrence of this complaint.
