Air Injection Control

OPERATION
After a cold start at an engine temperature 86 deg.F (<30C), the air pump injects filtered fresh air into the exhaust manifold for approx. 12 min. As a result, the CO and HO contents in the exhaust gas are distinctly reduced.

The Digital Motor Electronic (DME) control unit activates the relay for the air pump (ground potential) which, in turn, switches on the magnetic clutch of the pump. At the same time, a changeover valve is switched which opens a shut-off valve by means of vacuum and enables the flow of air to the exhaust manifold. The air is routed via a non-return valve through a manifold and individual branches into the exhaust pipes.
