SUBJECT:
Oil Level Checking on THM-R1 without Dipstick

MODELS:
E34, E36

Situation:
From 2/91 the transmission oil dipstick and tube are no longer installed on these models.

Action:
The following procedure has been introduced to accurately measure fluid level.

Fluid Level Checking

1. With MODIC (software version 3.0 or later) or Service Tester, access "Transmission Diagnosis - Call Status" and verify transmission oil temperature is between 30~ - 55~C.

2. With the engine running and transmission selector lever in PARK position, remove FILL plug from side of transmission oil pan.

3. Fluid level should be even with bottom of fill hole. If not, add proper fluid to this level or drain excess, if applicable.

4. Reinstall plug.

When performing transmission oil change, begin with these steps:

1. Drain oil.
2. Reinstall drain plug.
3. Remove FILL plug from side of transmission oil pan.
4. Add proper fluid until level is at bottom of fill hole.
5. Start engine with fill hole open and shift through all gears.
6. Check fluid level as required under "Fluid Level Checking".
