SUBJECT:
BMW CMT1000/CMT1000VR Cellular Mobile Telephone

MODELS:
1992 Model Year E31/E32/E34/E36, as of 7/91 Production

Situation:
BMW is equipping 1992 MY 850i and 750i vehicles with the Motorola CMT1000 type telephone. The telephone supports several new and enhanced features. The telephone is also available as an accessory in E32, E34, and E36 vehicles. This Service Information Bulletin contains important support information concerning this telephone program.

The CMT1000/CMT1000VR accessory telephones are compatible starting with 1992 vehicles only. THERE ARE NO PROVISIONS TO RETROFIT THIS PHONE TO OLDER CARS. Please refer to the parts information for model compatibility and ordering information.

E32/E34 vehicles produced during 7/91 and 8/91, as well as all E31 and E36 vehicles do not have stalk controls for the telephone. There are no provisions to retrofit the E31 and E36 with this feature. However, in some cases retrofit stalk controls for 7/91 and 8/91 production E32 and E34 vehicles can be made available. Consult a BMW Regional Specialist for further information. Please make sure the proper owner's manual is included with the car when installing a phone. The manuals for "nonstalk" cars have an orange warning page included in the manual package.

E36 vehicles will NOT be pre-wired for CMT1000/CMT1000VR installation from the factory. BMW has developed an aftermarket harness for E36 telephone installation for' 92 model year vehicles.

Phone installation for the E36 coupes (318is and 325is) is still under development. BMW will release information for installation in these vehicles as soon as it becomes available.

Installation:
Two versions of installation instructions are available, depending on whether the phone is a model CMT1000VR (Voice Recognition) or CMT1000 (NonVoice Recognition). Refer to Group 65 Service Information 65 05 92 (3483) for reference instructions on CMT1000/CMT1000VR phone installation.



Activation:
Obtain the Electronic Serial Number off of the label on the transceiver. This is an eight-digit hexadecimal code (numbers 0-9 and letters A-F), usually located next to a bar code. Valid examples of the ESN would be "82395F7B" or "DD99EF7B". However, codes such as "DG311463" or "SUN1741A" are not the ESN (only letters A-F valid, not "G" or "S,U,N") even though these codes are eight digit and next to a bar code. Your cellular service provider can assist in locating the ESN. In addition, the BMW Telephone Diagnostics Tool Kit in conjunction with the E32/E34 ETM Diagnostic Procedures (Group 65) can be used to display the ESN electronically on the telephone handset.

Program:
Refer to PROGRAMMING the BMW CELLULAR TELEPHONE sheet included with the BMW Telephone owner's manual. Additional special programming features will be found in the E32/E34 ETM Diagnostic Procedures, Group 65.

Operation:
Please refer to the BMW Telephone owners manual. This contains important information on ROAMING which both dealer and customer should be aware of. Additional important information on ROAMING should be provided to the customer by the cellular service carrier.

Diagnosis:
A special "BMW Cellular Telephone Diagnostics Tool Kit" is available for servicing the new telephones, which will greatly ease troubleshooting of the system. Please refer to Service Information bulletin 04 27 91 (3405).

Note:
The E34 sedan dashboard-mounted microphone is now available. This unit can be installed in E34 vehicles produced after mid-July 1992. The first E34 sedan to be prewired to accept the dash-mount microphone is VIN BJ82372. Note that the 9/91 date for dashboard microphone installation mentioned in the instructions is not correct.
