SUBJECT: BMW CMT1000/CMT1000 VR Cellular Mobile Telephone
BMW is pleased to introduce the new BMW cellular telephone, Models CMT1000 and CMT1000 VR, for 1992 model year vehicles. The telephone supports several new and enhanced features.
MODEL: 1992 Model Year E31/E32/E34 (as of 7/91 production)
Features: Telephone will interface to vehicle MID and stalk controls, when equipped. This allows total "hands-free" operation. This feature is unique to the new BMW telephone and is not available in any other aftermarket product. See "Hands-Free Operation" in this bulletin for further information.
Important features include two phone number capability, which allows two different "local" rate phone numbers for customers spending large amounts of times in two different locations. A signal strength meter on the handset display provides visual indication of effective range. A redesigned antenna lowers wind noise when the vehicle is in motion, and BMW is offering warranty coverage to match a new vehicle, if installed at delivery.
With other telephones, special features had to be programmed into the phone by the service dealer. The new BMW telephone allows direct access to the features by the customer, through handset controlled function menus. Refer to "Basic Instructions" in this bulletin for basic handset operation.
Safety and Performance are key considerations in any BMW product. The BMW CMT1000 VR, standard on the 750iL and 850i, features "Voice recognition" for dialing numbers, vehicle high-fidelity speakers with automatic radio muting, and a dashboard integrated microphone. With vehicles equipped with stalk controls, the user can execute an entire telephone call without removing his hands from the steering wheel.
"Stalk Controls" refer to two special switches installed on the steering column. These switches allow the user to scroll through stored name/number information in the phone, and have the information displayed on the MID. In addition, the right-hand stalk control can be used to initiate, and later end, a phone call.
The stalk switch on the left is part of the turn signal control lever, and operates by pressing the control toward the steering column. This same switch is used to operate the BC and display Check Control information, etc.
The stalk switch on the right is part of the wiper/washer control lever, and operates by pressing the control toward the steering column. This switch used to operate the "intensive wash" feature of some vehicles.
E32/E34 vehicles have telephone stalk controls as of 9/91 production.
E31 vehicles DO NOT have telephone stalk controls.
Vehicles with telephone stalk controls DO NOT have intensive wash capability, but DO retain the BC control capability from the left stalk.
The CMT1000, optionally available on 735 and 5 series vehicles, does not have the "voice recognition" feature for dialing numbers - but retains the hands-free capability once the call is established. Both the CMT1000 VR and the CMT1000 are available optionally for the 735 and 5 series vehicles. Refer to "Special Instructions for CMT1000 VR" as well as "Special Instructions for CMT1000" contained in this bulletin for an understanding of voice recognition and stalk control operation. Also refer to the illustrations that follow for the locations of the various phone components.
All customer and dealer programmed information can be transferred from a damaged or defective transceiver into the replacement transceiver. All phone numbers and configuration settings are maintained. This eliminates the additional task of reprogramming the phone after a transceiver replacement. Consult the E32/E34 ETM Diagnostic Procedures, Group 65, to be issued shortly.
