SUBJECT: New Transmission Designations

MODELS: E31, E34, E36


Situation: The former method of designating BMW transmissions does not provide the detailed description desired for identification of the new generation of transmissions. For documentation in Service literature an alpha-numerical designation system has been developed. These new designations clearly identify the major features of a BMW transmission.

Use of these new designations is being adopted by both the Service Training and Parts Departments.

Two or three digit combination code letters may be added for special identification. This practice should be familiar to you from the Parts microfiches.
