SUBJECT:
MoDiC Update Program

Situation:
The successful introduction of the BMW MoDiC with its sophisticated diagnostic and coding capabilities has, with the introduction of more sophisticated programs, overwhelmed its current memory capacity.

Solution:
BMW will resolve this issue using a two step approach. The first step is to update all MoDiCs to MoDiC IIs. The second step will be to introduce the MoDiC Station. This Service Information addresses and outlines the MoDiC II Update Program.

MoDiC II Update Program will include the following:

^ All MoDiCs will be put through a heat and vibration test that will help identify defects.

^ All defects will be corrected.

^ The current Modic memory (1 Mega Byte) will be expanded to 2 Mega Bytes.

^ The current Baud rate of 9,600 Baud will be increased to 38,400 Baud. A Baud is a way to measure the transmission speed of computers.

What this means for your service department is that due to the increased memory space (double that of the MoDiC I) the MoDiC II can store more programs at the same time. This means fewer downloading operations for your technicians. The increased baud rate of the MoDiC II when coupled with the shortly to be released MoDiC Station, will drastically shorten downloading times.

Example:
Version 3.0 Diagnostic Program currently takes approx. 30 minutes to load. With the MoDiC II it will load in approx. 15 minutes. The MoDiC Station will also alleviate the need to download using a car and the BMW Service Tester.

Special Notes:
(1) Communication ("download") Speed - Your MoDiC II will perform identically to your MoDiC I until it is coupled to the MoDiC Station.

(2) Memory Space - The increased memory (storage) space of the MoDiC II can not be utilized until current version MoDiC software is updated.

In an effort to reduce the amount of time you would be without your MoDiC, BMW has sent fifty MoDiCs to Germany to be updated. When they are completed and have been returned to BMW of North America, fifty dealers, all of which will be selected at random, will be notified via registered mail to promptly return their MoDiCs to BMW within a time frame of five (5) days. MoDiCs not received by the prescribed date will be sent back to the dealer and the dealers name will be put back on the list. Upon receipt of your MoDiC I, BMW of North America will ship you an updated MoDiC II.

It is important to note here that you will not receive the same unit that you sent. The update program was designed this way to minimize the amount of time you would be without a MoDiC which could have been up to sixty (60) days. Therefore, when you send your MoDiC, send only the MoDiC. Do not include your book or download cord.

Warranty:
BMW of North America warranties your updated MoDiC for a period of 12 months. Warranty work will only be honored if the unit is returned with a copy of your parts invoice and a completed AFA form. Please see Service Information 00 19 86 (1257) for more details. Any prior warranties still in effect are valid.
