SUBJECT:
Trunk Lock Actuator Becomes Disconnected
MODELS:
E36 Equipped with Kiekert Actuators
E34 Sedans Produced 9/91-4/93 and Equipped with VDO Actuators
Situation:
The linkage connecting the trunk lock actuator to the lock can come loose under certain conditions.
E36 equipped with Kiekert actuators - On these cars, if the white plastic eyelet connecting the trunk lid actuator to the linkage rod is installed with the opening facing up (when the trunk is closed), the eyelet can come loose from the actuator when the trunk lid is slammed shut. The opening should face down when the eyelet (1) is installed.
E34 Sedans produced 9/91-4/93 and equipped with VDO actuators - The trunk lid actuator linkage (1) can be disconnected if the white plastic connector eye (2) pops out of the actuator drive (3). This may happen if the lock button is pushed in while the key is in the horizontal position.
Correction:
E36 - Whenever the actuator linkage is connected to a Kiekert actuator, make sure the opening in the eyelet faces down when the lid is in a closed position.
E34 - If the linkage eyelet comes loose on the affected vehicles, remove the actuator and linkage, and snap the plastic eye (1) back in place. Secure in place with a 2 mm wide wire tie (3) around the actuator drive (2) to close off the opening in the drive.
Reinstall the actuator in its original position.
NOTE:
The connectors for both manufacturers' actuators are available through the parts system. Please refer to the appropriate parts catalog for part numbers.

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty.
