Campaign - Incorrect Temperature Sensor
Group 13Fuel System
Bulletin Number
13 04 94 (4044)
October 1994
This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 13 04 94 (4044) dated August 1994, which should be removed from your S.I. binder and discarded. It includes a new starting production date and chassis number range for the affected vehicles.
SUBJECT:
Coolant Temperature Sensor (NTC)
MODELS:
E34 (M5)
Situation:
Incorrect NTC coolant temperature sensors (blue connector housing) with tin plated electrical contacts, may have been installed on a limited number of S38 engines during production. Since the vehicles' wiring harness connectors which connect to the NTC sensor are gold-plated, the two dissimilar metals may corrode causing implausible signals to be transmitted to the DME control module which may adversely affect the driving characteristics.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves E34 (M5) vehicles which were produced from 12/91-12/92.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DOS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:
- Remove the NTC coolant temperature sensor plug. (Location: sensor mounted in the coolant pipe above the exhaust manifold-blue connector).
- If the contacts on the NTC coolant temperature sensor are tin-plated, the sensor must be replaced with a new NTC sensor with gold-plated contacts, BMW part number 13 62 1 401 945.
- Top off coolant level if necessary.
Note:
If the connectors on the NTC coolant temperature sensor are found to be gold-plated, the sensor does not need to be replaced.

Service Action Label Instructions: This Service Action has been assigned code number 118. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 118 printed on the label (2); and,
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Emissions Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
