SUBJECT:
M3.1 Engine Control Modules
MODELS:
Only Engine Control Modules with BMW Hardware Number 1730784
Situation:
The procedure in S.I. 12 08 91 (3409) dated June 1992 instructs the technician to reprogram engine control modules having BMW Hardware Number 1 730 784 using the MoDiC recoding disk "Recoding DME M3.1 M50 Version 2.0". Due to a software fault in the recoding disk, engine control modules having BMW Hardware Number 1 730 784 CANNOT BE REPROGRAMMED at this time.
Solution:
If, in the course of completing the procedure for Service Action 74 an engine control module having BMW Hardware Number 1 730 784 is encountered in a vehicle, it should be replaced. When an updated recoding disk is available, the instruction to recode this engine control module will be valid and replacement of an engine control module with BMW Hardware Number 1 730 784 for this Service Action will no longer be an approved repair.

Order replacement engine control modules using the part numbers listed in S.I. 12 08 91 (3409) dated June 1992.
Warranty
Information:
Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW Emissions System Defect Warranty. Reimbursement for these Service Actions will be provided through Campaign Entry. Temporary work packages for Service Action 74 are included. Only work packages 1 and 2 will be valid when the updated coding disk is available.
Only one work package may be claimed.
