Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The "Check Engine" light informs the driver of conditions that will cause the vehicle to exceed exhaust emission standards. In addition, the "Check Engine" light will display a limited number of emission related faults via the on-board diagnostic system.

LOCATION
In the instrument cluster.

OPERATION
Under normal operating conditions the light will illuminate when the ignition is turned "ON" and go out after the engine has started. If the light continues to illuminate after the engine has started or does not illuminate in the "ON" or start position, a fault is indicated.
