THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
This Service Information bulletin supersedes (orange) S.I. 62 02 93 (3737) dated February 1993. It announces a Service Action for affected vehicles. Please remove and discard (orange) S.I. 62 02 93 (3737) dated February 1993 from your S.I. binder.
SUBJECT:
"Trans Program" Message in Check Control when Ignition is Switched Off
MODELS:
5 Series (E34), 7 Series (E32)
Situation:
The Check Control message "Trans Program" is displayed when the ignition is switched off. The message is not displayed while driving, and the transmission is not in fail-safe. No faults are stored in the Electronic Transmission Control Module (EGS).
Communication interference between the Instrument Cluster and the Electronic Transmission Control Module (EGS) may occur during start-up on the above-mentioned vehicles and result in the "Trans Program" message being displayed when the ignition is switched off. The function of the transmission and of the Electronic Transmission Control Module (EGS) is not impaired in a complaint of this type.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves E32 and E34 vehicles which were produced in November 1992.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.
Correction:
When an affected vehicle (identified by DCS inquiry) is next in the workshop, check the Instrument Cluster Software Version by means of the Instrument Cluster Self-Test. The Software Version will be the fifth item displayed sequentially. Software Version is also indicated on the label on the back of the Instrument Cluster.
If the Software Version is 0.99, replace the printed circuit board of the Instrument Cluster (P/N 62 11 8 359 218).
Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 93. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-008) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 93 printed on the label (2); and,
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix a new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
