Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.2. Disconnect electrical connector from oxygen sensor, then remove oxygen sensor to prevent damage.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifold, remove necessary clamps and hangars and remove exhaust system as an assembly.
4. Remove exhaust system heat shield.
5. Remove nuts and bolts securing propeller shaft drive coupling to transmission. To prevent propeller shaft vibration do not apply twisting force to flange when removing nuts from bolts.
6. Remove bolts securing center bearing, pull shaft down from center to disengage centering pin, then secure shaft aside.
7. Disconnect back-up lamp switch near strut attaching points.
8. Remove bolts securing shift strut to transmission.
9. Remove selector rod snap ring and washer, then withdraw selector rod.
10. Remove flywheel dust shield , then the speed and reference transmitter cover.
11. Support transmission using a suitable transmission jack and remove bolts securing crossmember to body.
12. Remove clutch slave cylinder attaching bolts, then secure cylinder aside leaving hose connected.
13. Disconnect electrical connector from back-up lamp switch and release wiring from retaining straps.
14. To prevent engine from contacting firewall, place suitable block between engine and front crossmember and lower transmission until engine rests on block.
15. Remove transmission mounting bolts, then the transmission.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Preload propeller shaft center bearing 0.079-0.157 inch toward front of vehicle before tightening retaining bolts.
b. Ensure transmission is centered to crossmember on models equipped.
c. Ensure Torx type transmission to engine bolts are installed with a washer.
