Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Procedure

1. Check whether the ZAE Control Module must be replaced.

Identify the software version with the DIS Tester or MoDiC using the diagnosis program. Select the control module "19 Airbag" and read out the first display, "Identification".

Notes:

^ Three different Control Module versions are correct and therefore do not need to be replaced. Refer to the table below.

^ Software version 4.8 is displayed as "48" by the DIS Tester and MoDiC.

Identification of Control Modules

Part Number (as shown Software Replace?
on Identification Page)

8 352 763 Below 4.8, but not 3.5 Yes

8 352 763 3.5 No

8 352 763 4.8 or above No

8 369 828 Does Not Matter No

2. If the Control Module bears Part Number 8 352 763 and Software below 4.8 (but not 3.5), it must be replaced. Please note that either of two replacement control modules may be received as a replacement part (see "Parts Information").

Observe all relevant safety information when performing repairs to the Airbag system. Refer to Repair Instructions, Main Group 32, Subgroup 34, and Service Information Bulletin 72 01 95.

It is especially important that the battery negative terminal be disconnected and covered when connecting or disconnecting the Airbag control module.

3. Coding the replacement control module.

Code the replacement control module after installation, using "C7.0 ZCS Coding" (or later) as follows:

^ Connect the DIS Tester or MoDiC to the vehicle and turn ignition ON

^ Close ("Quit") the Diagnosis Program (if coding with DIS Tester) and select "Encoding"

^ Select series (e.g., E38)

^ Select "1 Recoding"

^ Select "19 Airbag"

^ Select automatic coding (confirm with "YES").

^ After automatic coding is complete, turn ignition OFF, wait at least 10 seconds, and then turn ignition ON.

The coding of the control module using the DIS Tester requires approximately 30 seconds (approximately 6 minutes using the MoDiC). The ignition switch must not be turned off during this process.

Any faults stored in the fault memory of the replacement Airbag control module must be erased with the diagnostic program after coding.

Important Note:
Depending on the availability of replacement control modules, you may receive either of two replacement control modules, Part Number 65 77 8 352 763 (ZAE Control Module) or Part Number 65 77 8 369 828 (ZAE II Control Module). Refer to the illustrations.

If a ZAE II Control Module (Part Number 65 77 8 369 828) is installed in an affected vehicle which was originally equipped with a ZAE Control Module (P/N 65 77 8 352 763), the Central Coding key (ZCS) will be changed and a new Central Coding key Label must be printed and affixed to the vehicle.

Additionally, if a ZAE II Control Module (Part Number 65 77 8 369 828) is installed in certain vehicles produced from 9/93 through 6/94, the "VN" line of the Central Coding key (ZCS) may contain data which is compared by the ZAE II Control Module to equipment on the vehicle, and which then results in one or more faults to set which cannot be cleared. When the fault is selected during diagnosis, the message "Encoding data does not match vehicle equipment" appears below the fault description.

If this second situation is encountered, the Central Coding Key Data must be verified and the wiring at the ZAE II Control Module connector must be modified if necessary, following the procedure described in the attachment to this bulletin.

*Parts Information:

Part Number Description Quantity*

65 77 8 352 763 ZAE Control Module 1

OR

65 77 8 369 828 ZAE II Control Module 1

Note:
Either of these Part Numbers is applicable to this repair; however, only one control module can be claimed per vehicle.

Service Action Label Instructions:

This Service Action has been assigned code number 152 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-055) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 152 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
