SUBJECT:
Supplemental Restraint System Control Module (ZAE) Service Action
MODEL:
3 Series (E36), 5 Series (E34), 7 Series (E38), 8 Series (E31)
Situation:
The Airbag Warning Light illuminates in the Instrument Cluster and Fault Code 1 "Internal Equipment Failure" is stored in the Fault Memory of the Supplement Restraint Control Module (ZAE).
It is not possible to erase the fault or to read the software version of the control module with the diagnosis program.
Cause:
Exposure to certain voltages may cause various internal faults in the control module which cannot be erased with the diagnosis program.
Important:
These faults have no effect on the airbag deployment function.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action affects 3 Series (E36), 5 Series (E34), 7 Series (E38), and 8 Series (E31) Vehicles produced from March 1994 through October 1994.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
