Procedure 3
Modify ignition switch housing and install new column trim.Lock steering wheel (in its current 90° off center position).
Disconnect battery and cover ground wire. Remove screw, pull off lower portion of trim.
Installation:
Check for correct position of lock.
Pull orange airbag plug out of bracket and disconnect.
Loosen airbag module screws (Torx T30).
Installation:
Tighten right side screw first, taking care that wiring is not pinched.
Tightening torque = 8 Nm.
Disconnect plug and remove airbag module.
Note:
Steering wheel is turned 90° to the right from the position shown.
Caution!
Airbag unit must always be laid aside (in trunk) with the impact pad facing up.
Remove attachment bolt, remove steering wheel. Rotate airbag contact assembly on steering wheel 90° counterclockwise, until lock tab clicks into place.
Installation:
When installing steering wheel, rotate 90° and install in centered position, to compensate for turning the steering shaft in Procedure 1.
Make certain that steering rack alignment marks are centered so that the steering wheel is properly centered.
Note:
When the attachment bolt is removed, the clip (1) holds the contact ring in center position.
Installation:
Lockpin (1) must engage in center position of contact ring.
Tightening torque: Nut type 80 Nm
Bolt type 63 NM
Adjusting Contact Ring:
Press down spring. Turn contact clockwise or counterclockwise as far as stop. Turn back about three turns until arrows for center position are aligned.
Release spring.
Installation:
Coat slip ring with copper grease.
Loosen screws and remove upper column trim.
Insert special tool 323 010 fully into mounting hole of ignition switch housing as shown.
Push up on tool until mounting hole breaks off ignition switch housing as shown.
Repeat operation in other mounting hole.
Remove broken off pieces.
Install clamp from parts kit around steering column. The tab on top of the clamp (1) should be flush up against the dimpled steel portion of the column, and the band of the clamp will be almost touching the aluminum lock housing.
Lock clamp into place with tool 323 020.
Note that the two plier jaws are shaped differently for directional use.
Make sure that the jaw with the roller type tip will be used against the locking tab of the clamp. Reversing the pliers will result in plier bending or damage.
Install the new upper and lower trim covers from the parts kit. The upper cover has cut lines across the cover, and the lower cover has score marks (2) to allow the covers to break in case of heavy frontal impact.
If the car you are working on has cruise control, cut out the blanking plug (1) in the lower cover.
DO NOT RE-USE OLD COVERS
