Drive Programs
Drive Programs
The shift points for the economy and sports program as well as for kickdown are stored in the form of characteristic curves in the control unit. Selection can be made with the program switch between these programs and manual gearshift.
The program switch is designed as a push button connected with respect to ground. Two programs may be selected via push button "A and M".
A-Program
The "A" symbol means automatic or normal driving which requests comfortable shifts and optimum fuel economy. Selecting "A" will post an "E" (economy) in the instrument cluster matrix display.
Selecting the "A" program in conjunction with range position "3" will produce the S-program; shift characteristic will based on performance.

M-Program
Selecting the "M" will provide the driver with full manual control of all upshift and downshift activity and will post an "M" (manual) in the matrix dispay.
NOTE: To ensure the engine reaches its operating temperature as fast as possible, the transmission shifts on the basis of the performance-oriented characteristic curves of the S-program in accordance with the following criteria:
- New start with transmission oil temperature less than 140°F (60 C)
- Time span maximum 195 sec.
- Up to maximum 37 mph (60 km/h)
The E-program is, however, indicated in the instrument cluster. After a period of 195 sec. has elapsed or the speed of 37 mph (60 km/h) has been exceeded the system switches over to the E-characteristic curves. This function can be prematurely deactivated by pressing the program button.
Drive Program Indication
The drive program is indicated in the instrument cluster coded via the lines L6 (E) Pin 10 and L7 (M) Pin 12. The line L5 (S) is not evaluated separately.
NOTES: The drive programs cannot be switched over by the EGS control unit before engine start since the control unit can only complete its initialization phase after it has detected an engine speed.
