SUBJECT:
530iA EGS (7.30) Transmission Control Module EPROM

MODELS:
530iA/iT Produced 3/93 - 8/93

Situation:

1. An updated EGS transmission control module EPROM is available to address the following:

^ Harsh shift P/N-R, P/N-D
^ Harsh 1-2 upshift
^ Harsh 3-2 downshift
^ 4-5/5-4 pendulum shifts at highway speed
^ Harsh engagement of lock-up clutch
*^ Trans Program displayed on the instrument cluster matrix display and any of the following fault codes may be stored in the transmission control module:*

^ 5 ^ 16 ^ 42 ^ 100

2. An updated valve body is available if a customer complains of a delay into reverse that is greater than 2 seconds and the latest transmission EPROM is already installed.

Correction:

To address the above listed complaints, several changes have been made to the original EGS transmission shift program.

Verify that the latest EGS EPROM is installed by checking the tester software number or data status number on the EGS identification screen.

The table identifies the latest software number or data status that will be displayed on the EGS identification screen of the DIS or MoDiC, if the latest EPROM is installed.

If a customer complaint of delayed reverse engagement greater than 2 seconds is received after installing the latest EGS and DME EPROM, an updated valve body P/N 24 34 1 422 271 is available. The improved valve body has been installed into transmissions with a serial number greater than 0175726. All replacement/remanufactured transmissions contain a valve body which is modified to address the delay into reverse complaint.

Hint: The transmission adaptation values stored in the control module should always be cleared after an EPROM replacement, valve body work, or when the transmission is replaced.

Procedure:

A. In case of customer complaint:

1. Install the latest EGS transmission EPROM if the tester software number or the data status does not reflect what is shown in the table above.
Please refer to S.I. 24 05 95 (4294) for instructions on removing and installing the EPROM.

2. Once the new EPROM is installed or if any valve body work is performed on the transmission clear the adaptation values stored in the control module using the MoDiC or DIS.

To clear adaptation values, select:

a. EGS diagnostics
b. "5. Special Functions"
c. "3 Pressure - adaptation values"
d. Depress 0 button to activate the clear function.

B. Complaint of a delay into reverse even after the latest EGS EPROM is installed.

1. Remove and install a new valve body P/N 24 34 1 422 271 as indicated in the E34 repair manual section 24 - 30/1.

2. Clear the adaptation values stored in the control module using the MoDiC or DIS refer to step A2 above.
