Engine: Service and Repair

CAUTION: Mark installation position of components, electrical connectors and hoses prior to removal. Cross connection of the right and left knock sensors will cause engine damage.

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under "Precautions."
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and lock hood into service position.
3. Remove cylinder head and intake manifold trims.
4. Remove air mass meter and upper half of air cleaner as an assembly.
5. Remove oil filter housing, then position aside onto engine and secure.
6. Raise and support vehicle, remove heat shields from suspension crossmember.
7. Remove transmission as outlined under "Clutch & Manual Transmission or "Automatic Transmission."
8. Drain cooling system, then remove starter as outlined under "Starter Replace in "Electrical section."
9. Loosen alternator, remove wiring from oil pan and disconnect alternator air ducting.
10. Remove air pump, if equipped, then disconnect engine to frame ground cables.
11. Remove A/C compressor without disconnecting lines, position aside.
12. Disconnect all lines, hoses, connectors and cables from engine.
13. Remove left and right exhaust manifolds.
14. Connect suitable engine hoisting equipment to lifting eyes on engine.
15. Disconnect engine mounts, note position of mounts through brackets for later assembly.
16. Lift engine from vehicle.
17. Reverse procedure to install.
