Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Engine Speed/Reference Sensor:

DME Component Locations:

PURPOSE
The engine speed/reference sensors supply engine speed and Top Dead Center (TDC) data to the control units.

Engine Speed/Reference Wheel:

OPERATION
The sensors consist of a permanent magnet, iron core and a coil of wire. A magnetic field that increases and decreases is produced as the teeth of the reference wheel pass by the sensors. The TDC reference signal is generated by two missing teeth on the reference wheel as they pass by the inductive sensors.
