Steering Column: Service and Repair

Fig. 6 Lower Spindle Bearing Assembly:
1. Disconnect electrical connectors, then compress retainers and pull off switch by pressing down on locking hook with screwdriver.
2. Disconnect ground lead, then remove relay socket and horn relay.
3. Remove setscrews, then the cover.
4. Remove snap ring, then sleeve, Fig. 4.
5. Lift out then remove steering spindle bearing and remove bearing inner sleeve.
6. Remove shear bolts, then turn steering lock to R position, then press down on steering spindle and remove steering lock.
7. Remove steering angle sensor from steering spindle if equipped.
8. Remove steering spindle bearing as follows:
a. Remove snap ring, Fig. 6.
b. Remove collar and spring.
9. Remove lower steering spindle bearing from outer sleeve.
10. Remove electric steering column motor if equipped.
11. Pull off potentiometer shaft, then remove potentiometer if equipped.

1. Assemble mechanical steering column control as follows:
a. Install the LH side, 8 x 32 mm bolt with lockplate, Fig. 7. Torque to 5 ft. lbs. Distance (A) should be 0.197-.275 inch.
b. Install 8 x 40 mm bolt with lockplate and nut. Torque to 6 ft. lbs.
c. Torque nut No. 4, to 5 ft. lbs.
d. Tighten hexagon nut No. 3, with lever, No. 6, in closed position. Torque to 9 ft. lbs.
e. Bend lockplate, No. 5.
2. Install new lower spindle bearing using installation tools No. 32 1 150 and 00 5 500.
3. Install spring and collar, recess in collar must face snap ring. Install snap ring with installation tool No. 32 3 070, Fig. 8.
4. Install steering angle sensor if equipped. Sensor must fit in turning lock.
5. Install steering lock. Dowel pin must be in bore.
6. Install, then tighten Torx bolts until they shear off.
7. Install bearing inner sleeve with bevelled side facing steering lock.
8. Install sleeve, then snap ring using installation tool No. 32 3 070, Fig. 5.
9. Install remaining parts in order of removal.
