Air Bag Control Module: Service and Repair





WARNING: Review Service Precautions. Improper handling could cause activation of the airbag(s) and lead to injuries!

REMOVE
- Disconnect battery and cover negative pole or terminal.
- A waiting period of approximately 5 minutes should be observed before beginning electrical work to allow the capacitor charge to dissipate.
- Remove lower steering column trim section.





- Disconnect plug connection for airbag (orange).
- Remove finisher from center console.
- Remove radio.





- Pull selector lever handle upwards to remove. Extraction force approx. 25 N.





- Unclip cover and pull upwards.





- Push driver clip (1) upwards with a screwdriver and push pin (2) to one side. Pin (2) remains on shift lever.





- Unfasten screws (3) and (4) and lift cover upwards to remove.
- Unfasten connector.





- Press down clip in center and remove Multi information Display (MID).
- Unfasten connector.





- Remove finishers. Unfasten screws and remove trim. Unfasten connector (heater control).





- Unfasten screws on left and right sides and remove center armrest.




- Remove ashtray. Remove covers.





- Unfasten screws and remove oddments tray. Unfasten connector and remove ashtray light.





- Unfasten screw.





- Unclip cover sleeve (handbrake) and fold down. Disconnect retaining strip and remove cover sleeve. Remove finisher (1).

NOTE: Replace retaining strap during installation.





- Unfasten screws.





- Twist clips, unfasten lower instrument panel trim and remove.





- Unfasten screws on left/right sides.





- Unfasten screws on left and right sides and remove oddments tray (center console).





- Release nuts and lift out control module.
- Unlock connector and remove control module.

INSTALL
NOTE: A new control module must be recoded via the BMW Diagnosis Information System (DIS).

- Install in reverse order.

NOTE: Before installing control module, make sure the ground lead is fitted on stud bolt.

- Check for possible trouble codes.
- Verify proper system operation.
