Code 36 (Canister Purge Control)

TANK VENTILATION
Explanation
This trouble code is stored in the case of a break or short at:

- Fuel evaporation purge control valve

- Wire from Digital Motor Electronic (DME) control unit to fuel evaporation control valve

- Output stage in the DME control unit

Effect of Defect
- Short to ground: No fuel evaporation control since the solenoid valve remains closed.

- Short to positive (or break): The solenoid constantly remains open. As a result, the fuel vapors supplied via the fuel evaporation control valve can lead to malfunctions when idling and during acceleration.

NOTE: During normal operation, the valve is opened dependent on engine speed and load.

Troubleshooting
Activate the purge valve with tester. The valve is activated at 1 second intervals - this is audible.
Does the fuel evaporation control valve respond?

- YES: Check wire and connector or loose contact.

- NO: Connect test lamp (12 V 10 W) and activate component.

Does test lamp flash?

- YES: Check function of fuel evaporation control valve, see test instructions.

- NO: Check voltage supply at fuel evaporation control valve. Check wires.

- Check output at DME control unit (Pin 36).

- Proceed with displayed scan tool diagnostic instructions where applicable.
