Electronic Immobilization System (EWS II)
MODELS:
All Vehicles Produced 1/95 and Later
GENERAL INFORMATION:
BMW has implemented a variety of measures to increase the level of AntiTheft Protection on 1994 and 1995 model vehicles (refer to S.I. 61 01 94 (3955).
During January and February of 1995 a new system is being phased into series production. This system, the Electronic Immobilization System (EWS II), represents an increased level of security over the previously installed Immobilization Relay (EWS I), as the electronically encoded EWS II system is independent of the vehicle locking system.
Developed to meet the stringent requirements for 1995 of German insurance companies, EWS II is an Electronic Immobilization System which works independently of the mechanical locking system, and which prevents the vehicle from being operated by the encoded intervention of the Engine Control Module (DME). The system is "self-activated" (i.e., it goes into operation as soon as the key is removed from the ignition lock), and cannot be deactivated mechanically (deactivation is only possible by electronic means).
