SUBJECT:
M42 - Acceleration Jolt in 2nd and 3rd Gear

MODELS:
E36 M42 produced from 09/93 until end of production (12/95)

Complaint:
A jolt may be felt when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gear with an engine speed of approximately 4800 rpm. The DISA butterfly opens too rapidly at this rpm and may cause a jolt.

Correction:
In order to address this complaint an updated DME EPROM is available. The EPROM is the same as the one used to address Fault Code 41, refer to S.I. 12 09 95. If the EPROM in the engine control module is not removable, a new control module with the updated software needs to be obtained.

Procedure:
In case of a CUSTOMER COMPLAINT proceed as follows:





1. Determine if the EPROM in the control module is removable. Refer to the illustration on how to identify if the EPROM is soldered into the module.

a. If the EPROM in the control module is not removable a new updated engine control module (P/N 12 14 1 429 767) should be ordered. The engine control module needs to be variant coded (recode) to the vehicle into which it is installed as indicated below.

b. If the EPROM in the control module is removable install the latest DME EPROM and variant code (recode) the engine control module as indicated below.

NOTE:
The replacement EPROM P/N 01 00 1 469 768 is valid for vehicles with EWS II and without EWS II.





2. Follow the coding procedure provided using programming software 6.0:

3. Clear all fault codes stored in the DME.

4. Verify proper engine operation by starting engine 3 times.

5. Check if any faults were reset in the DME.
