SUBJECT:
Fault Codes 5 and 13 in On-Board Computer (BC V)

MODELS:
3 Series (E36) - Vehicles Produced 9/94 and Later

Situation:
Due to improved anti-theft measures incorporated into the immobilization and central locking systems, the On-Board Computer (BC V) in E36 vehicles produced 9/94 and later no longer monitors the hood contact switch, and no longer activates the BC horn (when in "Code" function and three start attempts are made).

Because of the deleted wiring, Fault Codes 5 and/or 13 will be set under the following circumstances:

^ Fault Code 5: Set if the "Code" function is armed and three attempts are made to start the engine.

^ Fault Code 13: Set if the BMW Service Tester, MoDiC, or DIS Tester is connected to the [1][2]Diagnostic Connector and the ignition is switched on.

These fault codes can be ignored on E36 vehicles produced 9/94 and later.

No troubleshooting should be performed and no repairs attempted.
