Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the oxygen sensor and unclip the harness mount.

2. Unscrew exhaust pipes on manifold.

3. Unscrew transmission exhaust bracket.

4. Unscrew holder on rear axle.

5. Unscrew holder for final muffler.
6. Lower the exhaust assembly.

7. Unscrew the flanged connection.
8. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the muffler assembly.

INSTALLATION

1. Reassemble the muffler-catalytic converter using the alignment tab. Lubricate the connection lightly with copper paste.
2. Compress springs uniformly by tightening nuts to 10 ft. lbs.
3. Loosen nuts by one and one half turns. Flanges should be parallel with each other and the springs must not be compressed flat.
4. Install new exhaust manifold flange gasket.
5. Lift the exhaust assembly into place, and install new self locking nuts. Do not tighten at this time.
6. Reinstall holder for final muffler. Slide holder forward until rubber rings are preloaded by 6 mm. Tighten the clamp bolts to 16 ft. lbs.

7. Torque the catalytic converter-exhaust manifold nuts uniformly in two steps.
- Step one: 22 - 25 ft. lbs.
- Step two: 36 - 40 ft. lbs.

8. Reconnect the transmission exhaust bracket without tension.

9. Reinstall the rubber ring and preload the bracket upward. Check for sufficient spacing at the body and rear axle carrier. Adjust as necessary.
10. Tighten the transmission exhaust bracket to 16 ft. lbs.
11. Reconnect the oxygen sensor and reinstall mounting clip.
12. Check for exhaust leaks and correct exhaust assembly alignment.
