SUBJECT:
ABS Warning Light Illuminated

MODEL:
3 Series (E36) and Z3 produced up to 5/96

Situation:
A faulty relay may cause the ABS warning lamp to be illuminated in the Instrument Cluster, with fault code 145 (Pump inoperable) stored in ABS control module memory.

Cause:
Faulty relays produced prior to May 1996 may cause fault code 145.

Correction:
In case of a customer complaint, use the DIS tester to confirm fault code 145 is set in the ABS control unit.

Work through the test instructions in DIS to confirm that the fault is not caused by the hydraulic unit, or other component.





Locate the gray ABS pump motor relay located in the power distribution box, rear left side of engine compartment.

Use Relay Test Tool 61 3 010 to confirm if a relay is defective, and replace if necessary.
