SUBJECT:

Illuminated Key for Vehicles Equipped with Electronic Immobilization System (EWS II)

MODELS:

All equipped with EWS II (01/95 and later), without factory radio-frequency remote locking system (FBZV).

General Information:

Vehicles equipped with the Electronic Immobilization System (EWS II) are supplied with four keys, one of which is an illuminated master key if the factory radio-frequency remote locking system is not installed.

Keys supplied with EWS II equipped vehicle. Illuminated master key (arrow) supplied if FBZV system is not installed.

Keys supplied FBZV system is installed. No keys are illuminated, including transmitter key (arrow).

This illuminated master key (P/N 51 21 8 205 311) utilizes an LED for illumination, as opposed to the incandescent bulb used in earlier keys.

Because of the design of LED's, they must be soldered in place on the printed circuit board that serves as a switch plate in these keys. This printed circuit board is not replaceable, as it is assembled into the same portion of the key containing the EPROM for the EWS II coding data and would necessitate destroying the head of the key.

This design, however, represents a considerable advantage over the previous keys employing incandescent bulbs. Because the life of an LED is so much longer than that of an incandescent bulb, the failure rate of the illumination source is greatly reduced. The LED is further protected against damage by its recessed position within the head of the key.

Should the illumination of the key fail, make sure that the key's battery (P/N 51 21 8 201 226) is not discharged or loose. This battery is easily accessed through the snap-off cover on the side of the key head opposite the push button. Only if replacement of the battery fails to correct the problem should the entire key be ordered, using existing procedures for ordering a spare key.
