INTRODUCTION

Starting with 1-95 production, all vehicles were once again equipped with a new system. EWS II is a further refinement of the drive away protection system (EWS I or "Starter Immobilizer") introduced on the 1994 model year vehicles. The change to the EWS II system was to once again meet the next level of compliancy of the European Insurance Commission.

The system is totally independent, in operation, from the mechanical key other than the key fob which contains one of the components. The system features a wireless communication link between a programmed EEPROM (transponder chip) housed in the ignition key and the EWS II control module. The system will not allow the starter to engage until a properly coded transponder key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder. The transponder chip operates independently from the mechanical key blade and tumblers.

The EWS II and DME control modules are now synchronized through an individual serial number (ISN). The ISN is a unique code number that is permanently assigned to the DME and also stored in the EWS II control module. The ISN must match every time the ignition is switched "ON", before the DME drive away protection feature will be cancelled.

The system continues to offer the drive away protection/starter lock out if the BC code is set.

EWS II is installed on E36, E34, E31, E38 and E39 vehicles.
