EWS II Control Module

EWS II CONTROL MODULE

The EWS II control module is located behind the glove box in the electrical carrier in the E38, E36 and E31 models.

The location of the EWS II control module in the E34 is on the driver's side of the vehicle behind the knee bolster.

The EWS II module stores the data and codes for communication with the transponder chip. The data from the EWS II control module is converted by the transmitter/receiver and sent to the transponder as an AM signal through the RF link.

The EWS II control module is linked to the board computer, general module, engine control module, transmission range switch and the starter for the drive away protection operation. The EWS II control module also incorporates the starter relay.

The function of the EWS II control module is to provide improved drive away protection for the vehicle. It incorporates all of the functions of the starter immobilization relay module (EWS I) introduced on the 1994 models.

Carry over features of the engine immobilizer include:
- Lock out of the starter when the code alarm function of the board computer is set.
- Activation of the drive away protection through the Engine Control Module by cancelling the ignition and injection signals.
- Recognition of the Park/Neutral position with automatic transmission. The EWS II module acts as the neutral start relay.
- Engine start recognition for disengagement of the starter after the vehicle is running.

New features of the EWS II control module include:
- Activation of the drive away protection and starter lock out until the correct key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder.
- EWS II / Engine control module synchronization through the use of an individual serial number (ISN). The EWS II control module transmits the ISN to the DME when the ignition is switched on.
- Input of ZKE Double Lock condition (double lock is released when a correctly coded key is switched on).

The EWS II control module stores the following data for the transponder key inter-link:
- Key identification code - for up to ten keys
- Key password
- Changing code - for up to ten keys
- Service information data (for future use)
