Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove exhaust system, then the heat shield.
4. Remove holder for oxygen sensor connectors.
5. Remove electrical wiring clips from right side of transmission.
6. Loosen shift cable retaining nut.
7. Remove shift cable bracket from side of transmission, then pull cable out of holder.
8. Disconnect transmission electrical connector.
9. Remove oil cooler pipe bracket to hydraulic pump attaching bolt.
10. Remove oil cooler pipe bracket to oil pan attaching bolt, then disconnect oil cooler pipes from transmission.
11. Remove stabilizer bar brackets from left and right sides of the frame, and allow stabilizer to hang down
12. Remove both transmission center of gravity brackets.
13. Remove power steering line bracket.
14. Remove center of gravity mount bracket from engine and place it on connecting pipe.
15. Attach a suitable transmission jack to transmission.
16. Remove transmission rear support bracket.
17. Remove exhaust support bracket from transmission.
18. Remove propeller shaft joint disc from transmission extension housing.
19. Remove propeller shaft center mount, then pull propeller shaft down at center and separate from transmission. Do not let propeller shaft drop down, suspend shaft with wire.
20. Remove torque converter bolt access cap from oil sump, then remove torque converter to drive plate attaching bolts.
21. Lower transmission and remove transmission to engine attaching bolts and nuts.
22. To prevent torque converter from falling out of transmission, attach special clamping tool No. 24 4 080 or equivalent to torque converter through opening on the bottom of the transmission.
23. Separate transmission from engine and remove from vehicle.
24. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. To align torque converter to drive plate, turn torque converter until bolt hole in converter is aligned with opening on the bottom of the transmission.
b. Insert aligning tool No. 24 2 300 into bolt hole and lift transmission into place.
c. Position drive plate over aligning tool and bolt transmission case to engine.
d. Remove aligning tool and install torque converter to drive plate attaching bolts and spring washers. Install original drive plate to torque converter bolts and spring washers. Using any other bolts could result in transmission failure.
e. Refill transmission fluid as described in "Fluid Change" under "Maintenance."
