Dual Lid Sun Roof Features

The Double Panel Sunroof is found on E34 Touring vehicles only, and was offered as an option. Features include:

- Multiple positioning of both sunroof panels

- One touch control for both panels

- Anti-trap protection and convenience closing through Central Locking.

Possible panel positions are shown below:

Vent - Front Panel raised a the rear, floating headliner slid rearward for cabin venting.

Front Panel Open - Front panel can be opened to approximately 450 mm.

Rear Panel Open - Rear panel can be opened to approximately 450 mm.

Combined Panel Opening - Both Panels can be opened together, to vary the amount of opening front and rear, up to a combined total of approximately, 450 mm.

One Touch: Sliding the switch forward or rearward momentarily will result in the appropriate panel being driven to it's next end of travel. Pushing the switch upward momentarily will result in the sunroof moving to the completely closed position non-stop. Any one touch operation can be immediately stopped by touching the switch again.

Note: One touch operation will not work unless the Control Unit has been successfully initialized.

Anti-trap Protection: The anti-trap feature only works in the closing direction. Sunroof movement will immediately stop and reverse itself when an obstruction is detected by the Control Unit. In order to allow full sunroof panel closure, the anti-trap feature is deactivated 4 mm before full panel closure is reached.

Note: The anti-trap feature will not work unless the Control Unit has been successfully initialized. Remaining on the switch will override the anti-trap feature.

Convenience Closing: The Double Panel Sunroof and all Door Windows can be fully closed by holding the door key in the full locking position after the doors have been locked. Releasing the key before closing is completed will stop all convenience closing action.

Unloading during start-up: The double panel sunroof motors receive their power from the power protection relay. During engine starting, ZKE removes power from the power protection relay. The sunroof will not move during engine starting.

Fail-safe: In the case of electrical faults, it is possible the Control Unit may only allow motor operation in the closing direction. In the case of electrical failure, the sunroof can be manually closed using the hex tool found in the vehicle's tool kit.

Diagnosis: The Control Unit is fully diagnosable using the DIS Tester or MoDiC.

Initialization: Initialization begins with a fully closed sunroof. It allows the Control Unit to learn a starting point for all sunroof panel movement. Initialization is accomplished by placing both sunroof panels in the fully closed positions and along with the key on, holding the switch in the closed position for approx. 5-10 seconds.

OPERATION

All Double Panel Sunroof operations are controlled from a single switch located in the headliner. The switch is identical to single panel sunroofs of the E32/E34, Although it resembles the switch used for single panel sunroofs, the DSHD control module interprets the signals differently:

- Beginning from a fully closed position, movement of the switch either forward or back will result in raising the front panel to the vent position. (This is necessary before any other panel movement can begin.)

- Once the front panel is in the vent position, moving the switch forward will move the rear panel forward and moving the switch rearward will move the front panel rearward.

- For combined panel opening, the rear panel must be driven under the front panel (forward). Then the front and rear panels can be driven rearward together.

- Closing - Regardless of roof panel position, the sunroof can always be closed by holding the center of the switch in the upward direction

ADJUSTMENTS

The steel panels of the DSHD system are adjusted similarly to the steel panel of SHD systems.
