Description of On-Board Diagnostic System

Notes on the BMW DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM:

After being selected, the seat/mirror memory control unit (SM/SPM) assumes a fixed diagnostic mode. It is not possible to adjust the seat/mirror positions with the adjustment switches and store or recall the settings. Defect codes are not stored.

The diagnostic mode is terminated by returning to the general control unit overview.

In the status lists, the corresponding function is displayed after a delay of up to 5 seconds. When checking, the buttons in the vehicle must be pressed for a corresponding amount of time.

Stored in the defect code memories are only defect codes which occur during automatic adjustment (call of stored positions). Defect codes which occur during manual adjustment are not registered by the control unit. After automatic adjustment and detection of a fault, the defect codes are stored after the control unit has assumed its rest position (approx. 10 sec after completion of adjustment).

The defect code memory can detect and store the following defect codes:

1. Motor drives defective

2. Potentiometer defective

3. Drive or potentiometer incorrectly connected

4. Read-only memory defective

5. Memory switch, short to ground
