SUBJECT:
DME EPROM Programming Update
MODELS:
E34 - M6O engines with manual transmissions produced 3/95 through 4/95
*Situation:
There have been isolated reports of premature engine wear in some of our M60 V8 engines due to a chemical reaction caused by fuels with a high sulfur content. This condition typically leads to a customer complaint of EXCESSIVELY rough idle.
To inhibit the chemical reaction, BMW has already installed a higher temperature coolant thermostat with an increase in activation temperature from 85°C to 95°C, as of 3/95 production. BMW will also install a modified engine control module (DME) program into all M60 vehicles equipped with a manual transmission up to 5/95 production.
Note:
These modifications have been installed into all M60 vehicles with a manual transmission as of 5/95 production.
A certain fluctuation in idle speed is normal and an inherent design characteristic of the M60 engine, as this engine is designed for maximum power output and optimal throttle response while still providing smooth running characteristics.*
Affected Vehicles:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the required corrective action or take no further action.
