Introduction

The EDC III E38 system is a further refinement of the EDC III system introduced on the E31 models. The system still provides three automatic setting of the damping force on the shock absorbers. The control module selects the setting based on the acceleration sensor inputs, the vehicle speed and the turning angle of the steering wheel.

The setting selected will provide the best balance of stability and comfort based on the driver selection of SPORT or COMFORT programs.

Changes to the EDC III E38 system include:
- Vehicle speed input directly from the ABS wheel speed sensor.
- The integration of the switching solenoids inside the strut assembly.
- The elimination of the longitudinal acceleration sensor.
- The elimination of the EDC Relay.
