Front Seats

Front Seats

The electrically adjustable power front seats of the 740i/iL were designed and tested with regard to physiological compatibility for optimum seating comfort. The 14 way electrical adjustments are as follows:

- Whole Seat: Forward - Back
- Whole Seat: Up - Down
- Seat Bottom Tilt: Up - Down
- Backrest: Up - Down
- Headrest: Up - Down
- Lumbar width (firmness) adjustment
- Lumbar height adjustment

- The lumbar adjustment is a noticeable redesign to the adjustable lumbar support of the E32 seat. This feature allows the height as well as the width of the lumbar area to be adjusted.
- The wider E38 seat frame promotes a generous feeling of space and support.
- The seat tracks are covered with trim covers for a neater appearance. The tracks are longer by 20mm which increase the front seat comfort by offering additional leg room.
- The seat base is wider than the E32 seat. This increases the rear seat passengers foot space.

The optional seat heating is now infinitely variable. In place of the previous two heat setting switch the E38 now offers a potentiometer to finely adjust the heat setting. The switches are also mounted in the center console for easier access.

The familiar seat and mirror memory system is standard. The operation of this feature is unchanged except for the location of the memory switch. The memory switch is now located in the driver's door panel for easier access.

It is possible to remove only the seatback. The E38 seat base and backs are connected by levered lock mechanisms that can be separated by a latch. This feature eases disassembly or when removing only the seat back for servicing.

The moving pivots of the seat are spring loaded. The spring loading reduces the possibility of free play in the mechanical pivots of an older seat to maintain the feeling of quality in a BMW.
