Removing Left Cylinder Head

REMOVING LEFT CYLINDER HEAD (Cylinder Bank 5-8)

CAUTION
: Disconnecting the battery will cancel (clear) the memory of control units which have diagnostic trouble code capabilities. Be sure to interrogate all control units for possible diagnostic trouble codes prior to disconnecting the battery.
BMW anti-theft radios can be rendered useless by disconnecting the battery. Make sure you know the correct code before disconnecting the battery. See your owner's manual for more information.

- Disconnect battery.
- Remove left exhaust manifold, Removing Exhaust Manifolds
- Unfasten drain plug for coolant on left engine block.
- Drain and dispose of coolant properly.

Installation Note:
- Replace sealing ring. torque to 28 ± 2 Nm (21 ± 1.5 ft lb).
- Bleed cooling system and check for water leaks.

- Remove both cylinder head covers, Removing Cylinder Head Covers
- Remove spark plugs, Removing Spark Plugs
- Remove top left timing case cover, Removing Top Left Timing Case Cover
- Remove piston for chain tensioner, Removing Piston For Chain Tensioner
- Remove coolant manifold, Removing Coolant Manifold

NOTE: Assembly sequence for removal and installation is different.




- Remove oil lines on left and right of cylinder head.




- Crank engine at central bolt in direction of rotation until the first cylinder is in TDC position.




- Unfasten the accessible three screws on exhaust and intake camshafts on cylinder bank 1-4 approx. 1/2 a turn.




- Crank engine once enginewise up to TDC position of first cylinder.





NOTE: When camshaft screw connection is unfastened, brace camshaft on hex head.

CAUTION:
- Do not damage the cylinder head.
- Machine open-end wrench accordingly if necessary.




- Unfasten remaining three screws on exhaust and intake camshafts on cylinder bank 1-4 approx. 1/2 a turn.




- Remove sprocket on left intake camshaft (cylinder bank 5-8).
- Secure chain to prevent it from dropping.




- Turn engine counter-enginewise on central screw until it reaches 45° before TDC position.
- Note markings

NOTE: On engines without a 45° marking before TDC, turn engine counter-enginewise on the central screw until gap in increment wheel fits in special tool 11 3 440.




- Loosen grub screw.
- Unfasten guide rail on cylinder head.




- Unfasten guide rail and retaining screw for oil separator.




- Lift oil separator out of angle bracket.

CAUTION: When lifting the cylinder head, press oil separator outwards.




- Release cylinder-head bolts in sequence 10 ... 1.
- Lift off cylinder head.
