Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Procedure

1. A replacement DME EPROM must be determined by following the procedure provided in SI 12 07 95. Due to a difference in communication protocol you must only install the EPROM that is indicted by the determination process.

2. Replace the EPROM in the control module by following the procedure given in SI 12 08 95.

NOTE:
SI 12 09 94 (4132)previously indicated that if a DME control module with the number 1 744 606 identified on the label or displayed as the "Master Control Unit" number on the DME identification screen of the tester is installed, you could not replace the EPROM. This information is no longer applicable as you are now able to replace the EPROM,(Most use EPROM P/N 12 14 7 503 347).

In the event that a replacement control module must be obtained, do not order a replacement programmable control module by way of the EPC. A replacement programmable control module should only be order based on the part number identification/determination given by the DIS or MoDiC. By installing the part number indicated by the DIS or MODiC, the reprogramming procedure will be easier to follow (see S.I.12 07 95 for programming instructions).

3. Reprogram the control module by following the procedure provided in SI 12 07 95.

NOTE:
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that the COM 1 cable be used to connect the MODIC III to the RF head whenever a programming operation to be performed. If the COM 1 cable is not used the programming operation can be disturbed, which may cause the control module to "lock-up".

After reprogramming the DME the listed part numbers for a "Programmed control unit" must be displayed on the DME identification screen, as illustrated.

Note:
Part numbers are subject to change with a newer/higher version of programming software.

4. Upon successfully reprogramming the control module a new control module label should be printed out. One label is to be placed on the control module and the other should be attached to the repair order.

5. After Market EPROMs:

If during the course of replacing the EPROM you find an aftermarket EPROM in the original DME:

a) Contact the customer and advise them that BMW recommends that such an EPROM be removed and replaced by a BMW approved EPROM and software.

b) If the customer insists on keeping the non BMW approved EPROM installed, advise them that this EPROM if not certified by EPA or CARB may cause non conformance with environmental emission laws and regulations.

c) If they live in a State with a SMOG Check program, the vehicle must pass an emissions test, as required by State law. Without having this Recall performed this free service, the vehicle may be more likely to fail this test an require ,that you make costly repairs.

d) For vehicles registered in the State of California, the completion of emission recall repairs is required prior to vehicle registration renewal. In addition, the State of California requires that every vehicle must pass an emissions test (SMOG Check) in two year intervals and whenever a vehicle sold. California regulations require BMW to provide the Department of Motor Vehicles with a record of all vehicles, which have not had the Recall repair performed.

After you advise the customer of these considerations and they insist on keeping the aftermarket EPROM installed:

a) Abort the Recall.

b) On the repair order note that the customer insisted on keeping the after market EPROM installed and does not wish to have the Recall performed.

c) Upon pick-up of the car, ask the customer to sign a statement indicating that he or she refused to have the Recall performed and that the customers car has an aftermarket EPROM installed.

d) Keep a copy of the repair order in the service file for that vehicle.

e) Reimbursement for time spent on the vehicle can be obtained if you

-- Utilize the DCS claim appeal.

-- Submit a legible copy of the repair order indicating that the customer refuse to have the BMW EPROM installed.

-- BMW NA will issue a claim credit in the amount of 4 flat rate units, referencing the repair order submitted.

If the customer agrees to have the Recall performed and the DME EPROM replaced with a BMW approved EPROM and software, you should:

a) Make a notation on the repair order that the aftermarket EPROM was returned to the customer.

b) Upon pick-up of the car, ask the customer to sign a statement indicating that the aftermarket EPROM was returned.

c) Return the aftermarket EPROM to the customer in a suitable container.
