SUBJECT:
Trip Odometer Resets Itself

MODEL:
7 Series (E38), 5 Series (E39)

Complaint:

The trip odometer resets to zero after recording approximately 650 miles.

Vehicles Affected:

7 Series (E38) vehicles produced prior to 1/97;
5 Series (E39) vehicles produced prior to 11/96.

Cause:

7 Series (E38), 540i/iA (E39):
Software error in the Integrated Instrument Cluster (IKE) Control Module (SW Version 13 and below)

528i/iA (E39):
Software error in the Basic Instrument Cluster (SW Version 9 and below)

Correction:

On a customer complaint basis only:

1. Using the DIS Tester or MoDiC, identify the software version of the IKE Module or of the Instrument Cluster.

2. 7 Series (E38), 540i/iA (E39):
Replace the IKE Control Module if the Software Version is below 14 with P/N 62 11 8 378 984.

528i/iA (E39):
Replace the Basic Instrument Cluster if the Software Version is below 10 with P/N 62 11 8 375 906.

Warranty Information:

Parts and Labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles.
