Trunk Lid

Trunk Lid

The design of the E38 trunk provides a reduced curb loading height of 72mm (E32=85mm).

The Soft Close Automatic (SCA) trunk feature of the E32 750iL has been redesigned and is now standard on the 740i. SCA allows the trunk lid to be closed automatically by softly pushing on the trunk lid when it is placed against the latch. The latch is positioned offset to the center of the latch base. The latch base is mechanically connected to the SCA motor located in the rear wall of the trunk.

ZKE senses the position of the trunk lid via microswitch in the latch. ZKE activates the SCA motor and the latch pin base rotates 180° causing the pin to engage with the latch in the trunk lid and pull the trunk lid to the closed position.

The trunk will open when the trunk button (key cylinder), remote transmitter or the remote trunk switch in the drivers kick panel is pressed. When any of these three signals are present, ZKE activates the latch motor causing the pin to rotate an additional 180°.

The latch pin has a notched circular end. When the pin rotates on the open cycle, the notch pushes a release lever that unlocks the latch allowing it to be pulled open.

The complete electrical function of SCA is covered in the ZKE segment.
