Front Suspension

Front Suspension / Steering

The front suspension has retained the unique BMW double pivot lower control arms. The new configuration allows for a small positive steering offset which provides the best overall steering feel and control under all road conditions. The new suspension also accommodates larger brake rotors than the E32.

The suspension carrier design offers structural superiority with a weight reduction. The welded tubular cruciform carrier additionally reinforces the body rigidity in the front suspension area. Like the E32, the carrier still acts as the mounting platform for the engine mounts and steering box.

The lower forward control arms are made of forged aluminum. The use of aluminum reduces the unsprung weight which contributes to a quicker; smoother responding suspension.

The new variable diameter coil springs of the E38 front suspension provide the precise BMW spring calibration and offer a lower profile. The lower profile allows for a lower sloping hoodline and reduced drag co-efficient.

An added benefit of the front suspension carrier is it ease of removal from the chassis for accessing components.

When reinstalling the carrier, wheel alignment is not affected since the carrier and all of the suspension components are reinstalled as a unit.

Toe angle is the only approved front suspension adjustment.
